Position Overview

The Sr. R&D Laboratory Operations Technician will be a primary point of contact for internal and external customers seeking support and/or information regarding activities in Research and Development labs. This position will provide both administrative and technical support to R&D personnel to ensure a continuous lab workflow and data integrity are maintained. This position will be a direct contact for external vendors conducting business directly with R&D, and will coordinate work in R&D labs by Exact Sciences functions including Facilities, Metrology, EHS and IT. Additionally, this position will maintain the responsibility of inventory management and procurement of supplies and consumables critical for R&D lab activities.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Manages an inventory of R&D lab consumables including warehouse and stockroom organization. Oversees offsite storage inventory of R&D materials and requests distribution of items as necessary.
  • Maintains a master consumables list and applicable vendor information and contacts.
  • Procures necessary items in a timely manner preventing lab down time.
  • Maintains proficiency with SAP and stays up to date with SAP trainings.
  • Works with Production Support to follow up on missing items, backorders, or product information inquiries and communicates relevant information to lab personnel.
  • Coordinates high volume reagent and consumables needs for large studies with the appropriate R&D team.
  • Assists lab personnel with locating fit for purpose consumables, reagents and small equipment from approved vendors.
  • Coordinates and monitors delivery of consumables and services by external vendors to meet the R&D lab needs for dry ice, liquid nitrogen, medical waste disposal, e-waste and metal disposal, lab coats, and purified water systems. Adjusts the schedule when necessary to meet demand.
  • Primary point of contact for lab label printing training, information and troubleshooting.
  • Utilizes a facility and instrument monitoring system.
  • Serves as a primary day schedule contact for alarms.
  • Performs monitoring system hardware installation and troubleshooting as necessary.
  • Assists with the management of R&D cold storage including defrosting of freezers and allocating storage space for teams as appropriate.
  • Maintains administrative responsibilities in a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS). Updates, re-locates, or on-boards equipment as necessary. Submits corrective maintenance for equipment. Assists lab personnel with administrative aspects of CMMS.
  • Completes scheduled equipment maintenance and/or calibration and appropriately documents the process in CMMS.
  • Coordinates lab entry and timing with Facilities so that planned maintenance does not interfere with lab activities. Holds regular meetings with Facilities and maintains an action tracker to make certain R&D lab requirements are met.
  • Notifies lab personnel of lab closures, planned maintenance, HVAC and/or equipment issues/maintenance or anything else that could potentially impact lab activities.
  • Partners with EHS to promote safety in R&D laboratories. Generates chemical inventories, conducts safety inspections and coordinates reagent waste disposal. Maintains necessary certifications.
  • Supports the lab workflow and makes certain policies are followed to prevent DNA contamination.
  • Coordinates instrument calibration and/or repair, and a pipette calibration schedule with Metrology.
  • Conducts regular lab walk-throughs to check and maintain lab safety, cleanliness and consumables stock.
  • Performs lab protocols and reagent/sample preparation, as needed.
  • Troubleshoots lab equipment and computer issues.
  • Leads or assists with R&D lab improvement projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 75% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
  • Ability to utilize step stools and ladders.
  • Ability to safely utilize a pallet jack and hand truck.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens, and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.
  • Ability and means to travel 5% between Madison locations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biotechnology or field as outlined in the essential duties; or Associate degree in biotechnology or field as outlined in the essential duties and 2 years of relevant experience in lieu of Bachelor's degree; or high school degree/general education diploma and 4 years of relevant experience in lieu of Bachelor's degree.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience.
  • Basic computer skills to include Internet navigation, Email usage, and word processing.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with common laboratory and scientific instrumentation terminology.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Hands-on lab management experience.
  • Experience with SAP and computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Experience with inventory systems like Kanban and/or inventory management software.
  • Hands-on experience with lab instrumentation including real-time PCR platforms, centrifuges and robotics platforms.
  • Extensive knowledge of common chemicals utilized in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience using facilities and instrument monitoring systems.
  • High mechanical aptitude.

Salary Range:

$46,000.00 - $73,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - CA - San Diego on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually.
