The Department of Computer Science is an academic teaching and research department in the College of Engineering. It is a large and complex unit that encompasses research intensive, teaching intensive and professional activities. It is one of the largest such departments in the nation by the number of faculty and students, and its total budget and size are comparable to some NC State University colleges and divisions.
Essential Job Duties
The Center for Educational Informatics (CEI) and the NSF AI Institute for Engaged Learning (EngageAI) are seeking an experienced Multimedia Specialist to guide art design, research, and development activities for AI-enabled narrative-centered learning environments, game-based learning, and advanced learning technologies that utilize cutting-edge artificial intelligence. This position involves shaping the visual direction of adaptive game-based learning environments and intelligent user interfaces, with a strong emphasis on expertise in multimedia asset production and game engine integration.
- Guides the production of multimedia assets for interactive software systems, ensuring compatibility for game engine integration.
- Collaborates with junior designers, ensuring high-quality deliverables while refining production processes for efficiency.
- Works with researchers and targeted users to define usability and system requirements for multimedia assets.
- Develops new techniques and processes to solve 3D model production challenges.
- Manages art project planning, monitors progress, and provides status reports according to schedules.
- Delivers demonstrations and presentations at meetings and conferences as required.
- Contributes to system design and research by providing input on prototyping, 3D rigging, animation integration, and multimedia asset coordination.
- Deploys software systems at user sites, gathers feedback from targeted users, and implements improvements to the system.
- Manages art production roadmaps, ensuring efficient coordination of long-term multimedia projects.
- Leverages expertise in 3D rigging and animation to bring a wide range of art assets (e.g., characters, creatures, vehicles) to life within game engines.
- Utilizes extensive experience in Unity 3D to drive the development of interactive software with a strong understanding of art production processes and techniques.
- Guides the creation of high-quality visual output across both print and digital platforms, including web, interactive media, video production, photography, and animation, to support multimedia content.
This position is contingent upon funding.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in art and design, graphic design, industrial design, or closely related field and at least 2 years of prior professional experience working as a designer/artist as part of a team or freelance collaborator.
Other Required Qualifications
- A strong background using the software packages in Adobe Creative Suite, Autodesk Maya, and Unity 3D for designing in both 2D and 3D content.
- A clear understanding of the fundamentals of art and design with demonstrated creativity and imagination.
- Ability to quickly learn and follow established development processes and standards.
- Ability to take constructive criticism resulting from peer reviews, testing, and client feedback.
- Strong written and oral communication skills required, including the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master degree in art and design or closely related field.
- At least 10 years of professional experience in multimedia production and/or game development.
- Experience with narrative-based scripting languages to dynamically control the placement and interaction of art assets, such as characters and props, within gameplay sequences.
- Previous experience working on projects targeting K-12 education in classroom environments.
