Job Description

Responsibilities*

- inspect and test steam and hot water systems, fire and sprinkler systems, compressors, and air and exhaust system, cycling and functioning of gauges, valves and controllers to determine maintenance needs

- install, inspect and repair water lines, sewer lines, and air and gas lines

- repair and maintain boilers, refrigerators and air conditioning units

- repair sheet metal structures, repair electrical lines and control apparatus

- layout, install and remove hard and soft surface floor coverings

- build or assemble shelves, hang doors and paint walls

- read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and job specifications to locate machinery or ducts and to apply manufacturer's instructions and repair procedures

- braze, solder, and weld pipe, sheet metal and fixtures

- remove, replace or repair thermostats

- disassemble rotating machinery, replace defective parts and reassemble

- isolate cause of machinery breakdowns and disorders utilizing pressure and temperature gauges or measuring devices and determine maintenance or repair needs

- repair stoves, commercial garbage disposals, mixers, dishwashers, and other appliances

- coordinate the work of assigned assistants

- operate University vehicles including Kubotas, vans, and trucks on University and public roads

Required Qualifications*

- high school diploma or equivalent

- must be able to demonstrate communication skills both written and verbal; routinely ascends/descends 40-foot ladders; move and transport objects weighing up to 100 lbs; position self to work on roof tops and in confined spaces

- must be able to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics and job specifications

- must have a valid Michigan drivers license and meet University of Michigan guidelines with respect to driving record

- must be able to demonstrate required mechanical skills by passing an extensive written and hands-on tests

- must have previous maintenance experience working in a commercial setting and experience/knowledge in safety utilizing appropriate hand/power tools and equipment

Work Schedule

Thursday - Monday, 3 PM - 11:30 PM. 

NOTE: This is a year-round, 40 hour per week position.

Hourly Rate: $27.18 - $27.82

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the AFSCME union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
