Salary range for RSAM Registered Nurses $41.44 - $64.45 / hour

Responsibilities*

Provide care for a variety of adult medicine  patients requiring acute nursing care for 8-72 hours.
Included among the patient populations serviced by these units are post-procedural patients and patients who originate from the Emergency Department and will require close observation, assessment and teaching. In addition care is provided to palliative care patients that are housed on this unit.
Patients may have arrhythmias necessitating a proficiency in cardiac assessment and monitoring or a willingness to learn about them.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

To develop, implement, coordinate and evaluate MSSU’s new employee orientation program.

To identify MSSU’s ongoing staff educational needs and facilitate in-services as appropriate to the needs of the nursing team.

To design and implement staff development plans. These activities are done in collaboration with the MSSU’s Nursing Leadership Team.

To demonstrate the clinical nursing role through direct patient care, role modeling, and consultation to nursing and other members of the health care team.

To work collaborative with the multidisciplinary teams

Ability to facilitate change, direct nursing practice, prioritize, problem solve, evaluate outcomes and delegate 

Excellent interpersonal skills as evidenced by excellence in verbal and written communication skills among shifts, positive and professional attitude, and ability to provide direct and effective feedback.

Excellent organizational and leadership skills including working with a team.

Excellent clinical patient care skills and problem solving skills.

This UMPNC RN posting is posted under the Role-Specific Advancement Model (RSAM) as:

ENC- COMPETENT NE

Actual RSAM LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.

RSAM levels range from ENC-COMPETENT-NE to ENC-EXPERT-NE TO ENC-MASTERY-NE.


Required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for the position. Posting may be filled after the initial 5-day posting period.

Required Qualifications*

Current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Michigan. 

Bachelor's degree in Nursing OR 
Associates degree/diploma in Nursing along with a Master?s degree in Nursing

Five (5) or more years of nursing experience on an Adult Medical Surgical unit within the last 6 years

Two (2) or more years on an Adult Telemetry unit within the last 2 years.

Unit and committee involvement with evidence of accepting increasing responsibilities; must have two (2) or more years in the Charge Nurse Role, two (2) or more years of teaching skills and /or  two (2) years preceptor experience.

Desired Qualifications*

BSN preferred

Certified Med/Surg (RN-BC/CMRN) or Progressive Care (PCCN) preferred

Previous teaching experience.

High level of self-motivation and demonstrated ability to improve patient outcomes.

Excellent customer relation skills and a commitment to the principles of Family Centered Care.

Ability to function independently and as part of a team.

Applies current literature/research to problems in practice area.

Able to set goals in self-directed manner.

Documented ability to effectively mentor nurse colleagues.

Knowledge of principles of adult learners.

Documented demonstration of professional behavior and effective leadership.

Knowledge of UMHS policies, procedures, and practices is desired.

Flexible with schedule to meet off shift education needs.

Work Schedule

Hours/Week: 40 hours
Shift/Hours: Shift may vary , *must be flexible in shift to accommodate needs of the unit.
Location: Medical Short Stay Units, BI Taubman, UH South 4th floor .
**This position will be approximately 40% staffing and 60% fixed.

All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
