Position Summary

Located 45 minutes from the Nation’s Capital, nestled in a history-rich community of southern Maryland, The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has been twice named in the top 150 community colleges by the Aspen Institute with academic programs in over 100 disciplines. The HR Generalist is responsible for assisting with the administration of all benefits and retirement programs, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, employee assistance program, employee tuition reimbursement, and wellness initiatives.  Additionally, the individual in this position assumes the lead role for onboarding new employees and conducting new hire orientation meetings. 

The College of Southern Maryland conducts background checks in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the College's staff and students.  The final candidate for this position will be subject to the following background checks:  Criminal History Check and Sex Offender Registry Check.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Employee Benefits Administration – 40%

  • Assists employees with benefits enrollment, eligibility, and plan changes.
  • Responds to benefits inquiries from managers and employees on plan provisions, benefits enrollments, status changes and other general inquiries.
  • Assists with FMLA and Workers Compensation administration/claims.
  • Responds to retirement plan inquiries from managers and employees relating to enrollments, plan changes and contribution amounts. 
  • Assists the with the Annual Benefits Open Enrollment process.
  • Administers the tuition reimbursement program.
  • Serves as a Maryland State Retirement Plan coordinator for the college.
 
Employee Engagement and Wellbeing 30%
  • Assumes lead role for new-hire orientation meetings and onboarding new employees.
  • Distributes all benefits enrollment materials to new hires. 
  • Educates new hires on all benefit programs available so that informed decisions may be made by employees regarding their benefit elections. 
  • Assumes lead role in planning the Annual Employee Service Awards event.
  • Assists with Human Resources sponsored wellness initiatives for faculty, students, and staff including but not limited to wellness fairs, organizing on campus fitness classes, and financial and mental wellbeing seminars.
 
Data and Evaluation – 30 % 
  • Ensures the accuracy of all benefits enrollments in the HRIS to provide vendors with accurate eligibility information.
  • Ensure the safeguarding of confidential employee data.
  • Performs quality checks of benefits-related data in the HRIS system.
  • Reviews medical, dental, vision carrier invoices monthly to ensure new enrollments and terminations are accurately accounted for.
  • Reconciles Flex Spending (FSA) account on monthly basis.

Additional Duties:
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in HR related field. Experience and/or other training may be substituted for education requirement.
  • Four years’ experience in HR and/or Benefits Administration.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) preferred.
  • Five years’ experience in HR and/or Benefits Administration.

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Financial disclosure is required for this position.
  • Notary Public or ability to obtain within six months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Extensive knowledge of employee benefits and applicable laws.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrate excellent work ethic and personal integrity.
  • Ability to productively work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize assignments. 
  • Demonstrated ability to interact credibly and effectively with stakeholders at all levels within an organization.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and remotely with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient knowledge of computer applications including common office productivity software, internet, and software applications and platforms.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally.
