Access Services Assistant- Rotch Library

Job Description

ACCESS SERVICES ASSISTANT-ROTCH LIBRARY, Libraries, under the supervision of the Access Services Manager, assists with circulation, reserves, and service desk operations including managing library spaces, assisting patrons with equipment and systems, and providing in-person support on library services, collections, and policies. Will train staff and student employees, develop training materials, and participate in material handling between library units including transporting materials via book cart or delivery van; shelve, collect statistics, process materials, resolve issues related to collection maintenance, and handle financial transactions; participate in local committees and service improvement efforts; report safety and facility issues; and occasionally open or close the library.

REQUIRED: high school diploma or its equivalent; at least six months of direct or related experience around library or service functions; a valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle; experience using library catalogs; familiarity with business software (e.g., MS Office, e-mail, calendar) and interest in mastering new technology; robust organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; proven commitment to delivering high-quality customer service in a dynamic environment; initiative; ability to work both independently and as part of a service team and to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines; consistent attendance record; and ability to lift 40 pounds, push and pull carts up to 150 pounds, move boxes, bend, squat, reach to shelve library materials and tolerate exposure to dust. PREFERRED: bachelor’s degree or related coursework; experience in an academic or research library, with library-specific software (e.g. Alma, ILLiad or RAPID ILL), training or teaching and compiling, managing, manipulating, and presenting data (e.g., Excel, Access, Tableau). Hourly range: $20.12 - $27.17 - $34.21, salary based on qualifications and experience.

This is a union position. Employees are covered by the collective bargaining agreement between the MIT Libraries and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 93.
