The full-time Instructor, Addictions Counseling, will be a member of a Human Services faculty team that supports student achievement and success from recruitment through graduation and beyond, advancing equitable economic mobility, personal empowerment, and transformed communities.
This is a grant funded position that runs through June 2025 with possibilities of other funding allocations to support the continuation of this position after the conclusion of the grant.
This individual will serve as content expert in Addictions Counseling. They will consult with college and community professionals, along with provide leadership for ensuring the completion of three core grant project tasks:

The tasks for this role are a mix of direct teaching, mentoring/coaching of students, curriculum design, and program development.
1.) Establish an Accelerated Addictions program to open in Fall 2025,
2.) Develop and demonstrate a service model for the expanded usage of Peer Support Specialists, and
3.) Design and implement interdisciplinary training modules on Opioid Use Disorder and Trauma-Informed Care for use across other academic programs.
The tasks for this role are a mix of direct teaching, mentoring/coaching of students, curriculum design, and program development.

We recognize that this project includes multiple which involve a variety of skills. We do not expect any candidate to be an expect on each skills areas. The individual in this role will have access to training and mentorships to grow their skills for this role. They also will collaborate with a larger team for support.

Minimum Qualifications
You must possess the following:
    • Master’s degree or higher and 18 graduate hours in a human services field (social work, counseling, rehabilitation studies, therapeutic recreation, substance abuse counseling, gerontology) Note: Degrees and hours must be from a college accredited by a United States Department of Education accepted accrediting agency such as SACSCOC.
    • Current credential as a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS) through the North Carolina Addictions Specialist Professional Practice Board.
    • Willingness and ability to teach face-to-face classes.
    • Willingness to become acquainted with distance learning technologies and teach a range of course formats using online technology (asynchronous, synchronous, and multi-modal).
    • Willingness and ability to teach morning, afternoon, and evening classes as needed.
    • Availability for training and supervision.
    • Willingness to work as part of a cohesive team.
    • Understanding of and commitment to the unique mission and vision of Forsyth Tech.
    • Ability to work in a diverse environment.

Preferred Qualifications
We would prefer you also possess one or more of the following:
    • Prior experience and credentials to supervise students preparing for careers in Addictions

 

including CCS: Certified Clinical Supervisor from the North Carolina Addictions Specialists Professional Practice Board
  • Experience in curriculum design and course development.
  • Experience working with and/or supporting Peer Support Specialists.
  • Experience networking and collaborating with Behavioral health agencies and networks, especially in Forsyth County.
  • Two or more years teaching experience in a community college.
  • Experience teaching hybrid, online and/or multimodal courses.
  • Experience with distance learning technologies.
  • Skills to effectively use Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel, Forms, Teams, Outlook), Zoom and Learning Management Systems (Blackboard, Blackboard Ultra).
Essential Duties
Program Development
  • Provide leadership for the development of an Accelerated Addictions certificate path.
  • Build community partnerships and fieldwork sites for students.
  • Design curriculum for students for preparation for CADC and LCAS credentials for students who have already completed an associate, bachelor’s or master’s degree in clinical behavioral health field but lack addictions training or credentials.
  • Recruit students, specifically students from underrepresented groups and bilingual speakers to matriculate in Fall 2025 for the new certificate path.

 

 
Curriculum Design and Development:
  • Serves as the content expert for assigned curriculum courses to design and update.
  • Serves as content expert for the development of assigned interdisciplinary modules.
  • Maintains, reviews, and updates course descriptions, objectives, and syllabi for assigned courses and projects.
  • Incorporates inclusive content and work to eliminate discriminatory and exclusionary content from curriculum.
  • Intentionally designs learning experiences that extend beyond facilitating classroom instruction and assist students in achieving course, program, and degree outcomes.
  • Make recommendations to Program Coordinator for selection of supplies, equipment, textbooks for courses of study and the scheduling of classroom and laboratory facilities.
  • Engages in curriculum and program development that incorporates current educational theories and research.
  • Consults with community and college personnel to ensure content is current and reflective of the community needs.
 
Teaching and Learning:
  • Develop learning strategies and curriculum that will promote successful teaching and learning in a learning-centered environment.
  • Facilitate learning through classroom activities, distance learning experiences, and out-of-classroom activities.
  • Select and use appropriate learning materials, resources, equipment, and supplies to enhance learning and to maintain program currency.
  • Assume responsibility for teaching assignments as recommended by program coordinator, the department chairperson and approved by the dean.
  • Facilitate the learning process by designing and implementing instructional activities that are appropriate and meaningful.
  • Adhere to the departmental course guidelines and ensure that content covers approved competencies.
  • Assume responsibility for accurately maintaining all required college records including attendance and grade reports.
  • Assesses student learning using appropriate modalities and Inform students of their academic progress
  • Appropriately utilizes learning management system tools as required by the college and/or department.
  • Fosters a learning environment that ensures belonging and focuses on student and community needs relative to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Provide coverage, teach fieldwork courses, and collaborate with clinical education coordinator, as assigned

Faculty Mentoring:
  • Applies holistic advising principles to support students in the fulfillment of their educational and career goals.
  • Actively engages with assigned students.
  • Participates in department, division, and college-wide mentoring activities.
  • Learns and maintains proficiency with program requirements of assigned advisees.
  • Utilizes student advising, registration, and retention tools (i.e. Colleague, MyForsythTech, and Navigate)
  • Maintains appropriate student hours.
  • Demonstrated practice of fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom and among your team, as well as experience working in a diverse environment.

Community Relations:
  • Maintain contact with community partners and build networks.
  • Be alert to public relations opportunities and use these to promote the college and the department.
  • Pursues public relations opportunities and uses these to promote the college and the department.
  • Assists in planning and conducting advisory committee meetings.
  • Represents the college and program at recruiting events as needed.
  • Understands the strengths and growth opportunities of the communities that the college serves.
