The Academic Support Program for Student Athletes at North Carolina State University supports the recruitment, retention and graduation of NC State student athletes by providing a comprehensive support system that affords student-athletes equitable opportunity to pursue academic, personal, and professional development while strongly adhering to the principles of integrity, excellence, and lifelong learning.

Essential Job Duties

The Learning Specialist/Coordinator will work with colleagues in the Academic Support Program for Student Athletes (ASPSA) to meet the academic support needs of student-athletes while providing intensive, individualized learning support. Specifically, the Learning Specialist/Coordinator will collaborate with the Associate Director/Learning Specialist to manage and implement Learning Specialist and Support Services for student-athletes, including those with diagnosed educationally-impacting disabilities.

Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Provide intensive academic support and learning assistance to identified student-athletes
  • Provide consistent and frequent feedback to Academic Coordinators concerning the progress of identified student-athletes
  • Assist with the oversight, training, and ongoing professional development of ASPSA’s part-time support staff
  • Contribute to and/or lead ASPSA standing or ad-hoc committees as needed

Other Responsibilities

  • Secondary supervisor for 15-20 part-time academic mentors/semester.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Associate Director/Learning Specialist and Assistant Vice Chancellor and Sr. Associate Athletic Director. These duties require frequent collaboration with the MAC Director, the MAC Sr. Associate Director, University staff (Admissions/Registrar/ICA Compliance), and additional MAC staff as needed
  • Evening and weekend hours required

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Experience providing intensive academic support and academic skill building to students Demonstrated ability to teach learning strategies to high school or college students
  • Demonstrated ability to work with underprepared students in a one-on-one setting
  • Demonstrated understanding and appreciation of effective learning strategies, motivational techniques, and study skill development
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with individuals from various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and handle confidential information with discretion and according to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of regulations and laws associated with disabilities in higher education
  • Experience in the use of technology to accomplish academic or instructional tasks
  • Higher education and/or college athletics experience
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations
