The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Instructor, Sociology, De Anza College.

The Foothill - De Anza Community College District does not have a remote work policy.  All employees are expected to be available to work in person and on-site per the requirement of the department.  

The Foothill-De Anza Community College District does not reimburse applicants for travel, lodging or any other costs incurred by applicant to attend interviews.  All interviewing costs incurred will be the responsibility of the applicant.

  • DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:

    Under the direction of the Dean of Social Sciences and Humanities Division,the instructor will teach Sociology courses to a diverse student population at a college committed to student equity.  The instructor will be expected to teach a wide spectrum of topics in the discipline in which they have direct experience as well as the four broad subfields in the discipline.  The primary responsibility of a Sociology Instructor is to teach a variety of college-level courses in multiple fields that fulfill either general education requirements, or an Associate of Arts degree in Sociology. The instructor will be responsible for leading or participating in learning communities and providing community engagement or other student opportunities in field research such as internships.

    Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor.  Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extracurricular activities, shared governance, or any program/departmental leadership role.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

      Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.Master's in sociology or Bachelor's in sociology AND Master's in anthropology, any ethnic studies, social work or psychology or equivalent.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

      Strong interest and or experience, knowledge, ability and enthusiasm to teach a broad repertoire of lower division transfer courses in multiple fields of sociology such as Introduction of Sociology, Sociology of Gender, or Sociology of Structural Racism in the United States.Experience leading, advising, mentoring and providing community-based activities, internship, service learning and/or other student opportunities in field research.Successful experience teaching students of ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds at a community college. Familiarity in ADA compliance and/or RSI (Regular Substantive Interaction) etc…Experience teaching sociology courses with multiple modalities and deploying other emergent pedagogical modalities and tools.Ability to use various teaching methods that a) engage students in their own learning, including outcomes that motivate students to develop higher-order thinking skills, and b) ensure consistent and appropriate monitoring of student progress.Initiative and ability to develop courses, degrees and certificate programs.Commitment to the mission of the community college and its philosophy of education.Demonstrated enthusiasm and interest in working cooperatively with colleagues in multiple departments and in serving on college committees in a shared governance organization.

    HIRING RANGE: $71,934.90 - $133,543.60 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant’s verified education and experience.
