Job Description

Work Week

40 Hours | Monday – Friday 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Flexible with an altered schedule of one evening per week to meet department needs. Schedule adjusts during Summer to a 32-hour workweek.                 

Position Summary

Through developing supportive and empowering relationships with students, the Learning Specialist has significant responsibility in upholding the College’s focus on student learning. The Specialist is responsible for the delivery of a multitude of retention and success services for students by interacting and communicating with students, faculty, and staff on issues and barriers hindering student progress. Using a collaborative, holistic approach, the Specialist will develop and implement an array of academic support services in multiple formats (individual, group, online, in-person, etc...). This position provides tutoring, mentoring, and coaching services to increase students’ study, thinking, learning, and success skills, while also helping students maintain progress on their educational plans. 

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Provide direct student retention services through programs such as the collegewide early alert system, students who place into developmental coursework, or other programs serving special populations of students who experience issues and barriers to succeeding, persisting, and completing college due to academic or personal needs
  • Provide targeted intervention services to students and help address academic and personal needs hindering their success
  • Provide academic support services such as tutoring, mentoring and coaching to students in general and, in specific, retention and success programs
  • Tutor, mentor and coach students in the development of their academic, thinking, and learning skills
  • Tutor, mentor, and coach students in individualized and group sessions on how to develop their study skills, such as effective reading, notetaking, organization, and time management strategies
  • Partner with faculty, staff, and administrators in the development and implementation of innovative practices to improve instruction and academic support of students
  • Train tutors and other staff members whose work is focused on retaining students and helping them transition to college
  • Collaborate with relevant departments, faculty, and staff across the College to ensure timely academic and retention support for students in need
  • Participate in College initiatives focused on retention, transition, academic, and other student support services
  • Maintain timely data tracking, documentation, and reporting of direct services provided for early alert, tutoring, and related learning support and retention services
  • Communicate and collaborate regularly with faculty and staff involved in early alert, tutoring, related learning support and retention services
  • Develop appropriate education plans and advise students on selection of courses
  • Assist with the facilitation of New Student Orientation by presenting College information and advising students on selection of courses
  • Participate in relevant training and professional development services to effectively support student academic success and retention
  • Engage and build positive rapport with students
  • Participate in appropriate professional development trainings and associations
  • Act as a liaison with other academic and student affairs departments and divisions related to job responsibilities and departmental functions
  • Market and promote learning support and retention services 
  • Work collaboratively with others (e.g. colleagues, stakeholders, vendors) to accomplish functions and responsibilities
  • Provide support and direction to student employees
  • Assume additional duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or higher-level administration

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from regionally accredited institution
  • One year of experience working with students who are academically underprepared or underrepresented, and helping them progress academically
