Optometric Resident

Job Description

We are seeking a Optometric Resident who will work collaboratively with attending faculty with the objective to gain clinical autonomy providing primary ophthalmological evaluations for patients seeking vision services at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Wilmer Eye Institute. Services include diagnosing and treating routine and comprehensive visual problems and prescribing treatment as license allows. Refers and/or works in consultation with various ophthalmological specialists to diagnose and treat complicated vision disorders. Refers patients to surgeons for surgical interventions as needed. Assists in teaching ophthalmology fellows, residents, and medical students.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform various routine and comprehensive services including, but not limited to,
    • diabetic eye examinations.
    • evaluation of dry eye disease, cataracts, and glaucoma suspicion.
    • Plaquenil screenings.
    • Triage of urgent eye or vision concerns.
  • Refer patients requiring surgical or advanced sub-specialist care to appropriate physician/s in glaucoma, retina, cornea, neuro-ophthalmology, oculoplastics, and low vision rehabilitation.
  • Perform refractions and prescribe eye glasses and soft contact lenses with the opportunity to work with patients needing specialty therapeutic contact lenses.
  • Provide specialty contact lens services under the direction of faculty Amanda Crum, OD and Lee Guo, OD.
  • Following refraction and evaluation, refer patients to any one of Wilmer’s Optical stores. Inform patients that Wilmer has a team of licensed opticians and high-quality materials that are not available in standard retail stores.
  • Capitalize on use of Cirrus OCT, HVF3, Pentacam, pachymeter, and autorefractor.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctor of Optometry Degree from an ACOE accredited school or college of optometry.
  • Successful completion of Parts I, II, III and TMOD of the NBEO scores by February 1st, two months prior to beginning of the residency program.
  • Must have submitted State of Maryland Optometry license application prior to the beginning of the residency program.
