The Nonwovens Institute (NWI) is the world’s first accredited academic program for the interdisciplinary field of engineered fabrics. Based at the Centennial Campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, the NWI is an innovative global partnership between industry, government, and academe. Operating on an “Open Innovation” platform, the Nonwovens Institute engages experts from industry and higher education in building next-generation filament extrusion and nonwoven applications while also providing training and guidance to the field’s future leaders.

Essential Job Duties

The Process Technician will perform skilled work in nonwovens process development, equipment maintenance and repair, and process development execution. Responsibilities in the current assignment are focused on filament spinning and include:

  • Maintain a clean and organized lab environment.
  • Perform general mechanical maintenance using both power and hand tools.
  • Aid University and Industry Researchers in confirming trial plan design, and in conducting experimental plan execution.
  • Leverage a working knowledge of filament characteristics and how the machine process affects these characteristics to execute trial plans and document observations with excellence.
  • Learn and apply skill sets and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) pertaining to polymer extrusion, equipment start-up and shut down operations, lab cleaning, and equipment maintenance.
  • Know and follow trial plan instructions and SOPs associated with safety, raw material staging, equipment set up, centerline management, quality testing, documentation, packaging and labeling.
  • Record and document experimental conditions and observations during process trials.
  • Contribute to completion of Safety, Good Manufacturing Practice (GPM) and ISO 9001+ requirements, & ongoing maintenance of NWI certifications per NWI/LINC expectations.
  • Contribute to improved documentation of SOPs when and where needed.

Other Responsibilities

  • Ability to follow instruction or standard operating procedures for assigned tasks.
  • Ability to perform tasks completely and accurately.
  • Ability to check work for mistakes prior to finalizing.
  • Ability to respond to system/equipment failure or to issues that arise when conducting filament spinning process trials or when performing equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to identify and resolve standard/routine problems with nonwovens process equipment through routine inspection, preventive maintenance, and basic testing.
  • Ability to operate filament spinning process equipment according to trial plans & standard operating procedures, and to define problems and troubleshoot problems together with the operating team, when they occur.
  • Ability to document processing & quality test lab work according to trial plan requirements.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • The ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds frequently, with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Required License or Certification

  • Forklift license required within first 90 days of hire.
  • A valid driver’s license is required by date of hire with a valid NC driver’s license within 90 days.
  • Licenses and certifications must be maintained as a condition of employment.
