Job Summary

The Cardiovascular ICU (CVC 4) is a 24-bed adult intensive care unit caring for patients who have recently undergone cardiac, thoracic, or vascular surgery.
This unit specializes in coronary artery bypass, heart and lung transplantation, heart valve repair, ventricular assist devices and esophageal procedures as well as carotid re-vascularization and aneurysm repairs.
Staff members collaborate with the Advanced Practice Team and are involved with patient/family conferences, patient care rounds, and referrals.

Responsibilities*

To assist the Clinical Nursing Director in planning and management of the unit and the provision of patient care.
To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, education and research.
To assist in coordinating between management and patient care activities consistent with the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Center mission and goal statements.
Reports directly to the Clinical Nursing Director. Collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel.
Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over nursing and support staff as delegated by Clinical Nursing Director.

Responsibilities include:

Personnel Management:
Plan, assign and supervise the work of nursing and support staff.
Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting nursing and support staff.
Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff.
Participate in the development, implementation and revision of individual performance plans.
Facilitate open channels of communication with managers, peers, staff, and physicians.
Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, and members of leadership team as delegated by Clinical Nursing Director.

Clinical Practice:
To provide clinical assessment. Mentoring, coaching and evaluation of staff.

Management of Clinical Area:
Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives.
Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.
Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.
Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.
Participate in the monitoring of Department payroll and commodity expenditures.
Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process.
Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director. Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews and reference checks. Collaborate with Educational Coordinator to implement competency based evaluation.
Participate in developing of unit/area policy/procedure and standards of Nursing Care. Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.

Quality Assurance and Research:
Participate in planning, coordinating and evaluating unit quality improvement activities.
Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff.
Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable.

Background Screening
