Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, has an immediate need for a Full-time Lab Manager in Science, Engineering, and Technology. The typical work schedule is Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.  This schedule is subject to change with advanced notice and may on occasion require evening or Saturday hours. This is a Non- Bargaining, Exempt, Grade 31 position. Montgomery College promotes and creates a working and learning environment rooted in the basic tenets of fairness, diversity, and inclusiveness.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Manages all aspects of daily operations for multiple different laboratories, providing technical assistance and overseeing the repair and maintenance of equipment and instruments.
  • Supervises laboratory staff, including prioritizing and assigning work, setting schedules, conducting performance evaluations, training staff, hiring, and recommending disciplinary actions.
  • Assists department chairs in aligning course offerings and class schedules to available and appropriate laboratory, classroom, and other instructional spaces.
  • Research new products and technologies, while communicating and negotiating with vendors, to make recommendations for and to process purchases.
  • Plans, designs, coordinates, and recommends facility changes and equipment needs.
  • Evaluates operations and activities for effectiveness and prepares various reports related to assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Maintains accurate records, approves expenditures, and prepares and administers the laboratory budget.
  • Manages all aspects of laboratory safety for the area, ensuring personnel and equipment compliance with safety protocols and regulations and that personnel are properly trained.
  • Serves on collegewide lab safety committees.
  • Manages any technologies and spaces used for instruction, including tracking computers, software, software updates, and/or license renewals, and coordinates with other units at the college, as needed, to address issues.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an academic field related to the natural sciences or engineering OR the equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Four years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures, principles, practices, and techniques common to instructional science laboratories, including tools, equipment and materials, and hazard/safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of instructional software, other technology, and educational materials employed in instructional science laboratories.
  • Familiarity with principles and practices of learning as applied to the roles of instructional support staff and laboratory procedures.
  • Effective communication skills including presentations and interpersonal relations.
  • Experience managing personnel in a diverse environment.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in an academic field related to the natural sciences or engineering.
  • Five years of laboratory coordinator experience in an academic setting.
  • Experience hiring, supervising, and evaluating staff.
  • Experience coordinating physics, engineering, and/or earth and space sciences labs in an academic setting.
  • Experience working in a collective bargaining environment as a member or manager.

Hiring Range $76,679 to $99,671/annually. Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity.  Please include a complete resume including all relevant and related work experience.
