Job Description

Johns Hopkins Carey Business School is seeking a qualified professional for the role of Assistant Director, Admissions based out of our offices in Baltimore's beautiful Harbor East.

This position has specific responsibility for a designated recruitment territory within the full-time MBA. Carey offers a full-time MBA, part-time/online MBA, and numerous Master of Science, dual degree, and certificate programs. when representing Carey publicly, all admissions officers speak to the full portfolio of Carey programs, although each may have a specific focus.


Reporting to the Director of Recruitment within the Office of Admissions, this position will manage recruitment activities and planning in support of strategic enrollment goals for the full-time MBA. The position works as part of the Office of Admissions team.


  • Strategic Planning – Position partners with Director of Recruitment to develop a strategic recruitment plan for each assigned program/territory in support of program, school, and institutional goals.
  • Strategic Collaboration – As the subject matter expert in the Office of Admissions on their assigned programs, this position is expected to collaborate across Carey with the academic program director, academic program manager, and other key faculty and staff to keep current on each assigned program’s curriculum, differentiating features, and goals. Position will attend and report out on recruitment activities and admissions statistics at regular cross-functional program meetings.
  • Relationship Management – Build and maintain relationships with prospective students for assigned programs in a consultative sales environment using a variety of communication methods and technology. Ensure prospective students have the information they need to make an informed enrollment decision
  • Research and Data Analysis – Position works with Director of Recruitment and Associate Director of Operations and Enrollment Analytics to run and interpret reporting on admissions funnel, recruitment pipeline, effectiveness of recruitment initiatives, and progress toward overall enrollment goals. Position will also be asked to benchmark and interpret existing research on trends in graduate management recruitment and admissions.


This position requires professionalism, strong communication skills, and a team-oriented approach. Some evening and weekend work is required. The assistant director must be willing and able to travel domestically as well as internationally, if needed. Exact travel responsibility dependent on assigned territory.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Student Recruitment

  • Effectively communicate the value of graduate business education, the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, and the full-time MBA to a diverse population of prospective students based on students’ individual backgrounds, interests, and needs.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge on all Carey Business School credit-bearing programs and application procedures to be able to fully represent the Office of Admissions in all recruitment activities.
  • Communicate with prospective students through in-person meetings, e-mail, text messaging, video and telephone conversations, and other emerging technologies.
  • Counsel prospective students on program details and the application process.
  • Utilize CRM (Slate) and other related technologies to track communication with applicants, summarize meetings, plan and host events, and send targeted e-mail and text messages.
  • Develop and implement an annual recruitment plan for assigned programs and populations of students.
  • Present publicly and serve as a representative of Carey Business School to individuals and groups at virtual, on-campus, and off-campus events, including but not limited to, open house programs, information sessions, MBA and graduate school fairs, and one-on-one meetings/interviews.
  • Travel on behalf of Carey Business School for recruitment and other school-related events. Domestic travel required. International travel possible. Exact travel responsibility dependent on assigned programs and geographic territory. Typically, maximum of 4-6 partial weeks from July through November and 3-5 partial weeks January through May.
  • Plan and lead recruitment events for assigned program(s) and assist with any other Admission-wide events as needed including but not limited to Open House programs, Admitted Student Days, webinars, interviews, tours, etc.
  • Mobilize Carey Business School student ambassadors and alumni ambassadors to support recruitment efforts of assigned programs. Recommend new students and alumni to serve as ambassadors.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Office of Admissions as well as faculty, staff, and administration in addressing outreach and recruitment challenges and opportunities.
  • Work with the Office of Marketing and Communications to ideate marketing/recruitment of Carey programs, as necessary.
  • Provide data and reports in support of evaluating and enhancing recruitment strategies.
  • Develop and maintain effective professional relationships with prospective MBA candidates. Nurture admitted candidates from admission to enrollment.


Admission Decisions

  • Interview full-time MBA applicants, review application files, and recommend acceptance or denial based upon established admissions criteria and holistic read as designated for all Carey Business School degree programs.
  • Make scholarship recommendations.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Excellent sales ability; must be able to recruit in highly competitive market.
  • Requires a high degree of professionalism.
  • Knowledge of full-time MBA programs, landscape, and recruitment strategy.
  • Strong technology skills including the ability to leverage a CRM and reporting tools.
  • Exceptional public speaking, verbal, and written communication skills; with the ability to communicate professionally and effectively to lead communication at all organizational levels, and with a diverse set of constituents.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and build solid working relationships with colleagues in Admissions, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and external partners.
  • Ability to analyze admissions data and trends, forecast changes in higher education recruitment, and develop appropriate strategies to respond.
  • Proven ability to assess priorities, respond quickly to changing needs, organize time, and work effectively independently and as part of a team.
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to travel and work nights and weekends as necessary. Valid passport or ability to apply for/renew a passport as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Five years progressively responsible related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree.
  • Previous experience with Slate or other student application and CRM platforms preferred.
  • An understanding of graduate management education.
  • Prior professional experience in admissions for a full-time MBA program.
