Postdoctoral Associate
Job Description
POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Materials Science and Engineering, to join an interdisciplinary research team that aims to automate defect generation processes and optical measurement within the microscope, allowing for scalable spin defect arrays and enhanced photonic functionalities, merging quantum photonics with state-of-the-art scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) capabilities, enabling simultaneous quantum nanophotonic measurements and atomic defect generation in materials. Will contribute to the design, fabrication, and characterization of nanophotonic devices and quantum defect systems, performing cryogenic quantum optical spectroscopy and contributing to the development of a novel STEM sample holder for optical measurements at cryogenic temperatures; and work closely with a team of experts in quantum photonics, defect physics, materials science, and microscopy to push the boundaries of photonic device engineering at the atomic level.
Job Requirements:
REQUIRED: Ph.D. in a relevant technical discipline (e.g., condensed matter physics, materials science, electrical engineering, etc.); strong background in quantum nanophotonics and optical spectroscopy; demonstrated experience in designing and fabricating integrated silicon photonic circuits (e.g., resonators, waveguides, couplers); excellent quantitative analysis and experimental design skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team; and excellent oral and written communication skills. PREFERRED: expertise in quantum optics, cryogenic optical techniques, and familiarity with quantum defects, particularly in layered materials; and knowledge of atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. Job #24437
Applications will be reviewed immediately, and selections made on a rolling basis.
Interested applicants should email a single PDF, to fmross@mit.edu and jpklein@mit.edu, that includes a brief cover letter: outlining availability, motivation, suitability for the role, interest in the project, relevant qualifications or experience, and a general statement of research goals; a detailed CV; and the contact information, including email addresses, of three references.
