Job Description

The Montgomery College Adult ESOL & Basic Skills for College and Careers (AEBSCC) department is currently accepting applications for a part-time ESOL faculty member to teach classes in our WorkPlus! Program.  We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, and demonstrates the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner.

Our workforce readiness programs provide eligible participants with the training and English language and basic skills required for the credentials such as Nursing Assistant, Apartment Maintenance Technology, Phlebotomy, Certified Medical Assistant, or Biotechnology.   In these courses, the English language instructor will team/co-teach with a content expert, ensuring that students have the reading, writing, listening, and speaking and basic skills needed for credential attainment and employment.  These courses utilize the I-BEST models for instruction.

Candidates should be prepared to learn in-depth about the specific sector that they will address.  Classes may be in person or remote (DC, MD or VA).

Duties and Responsibilities:

Planning & Instruction

  • Develop and deliver lesson plans and participate in the development of curriculum based on required standards.
  • Provide scaffolded, explicit instruction, practice, and assessment in reading, writing, speaking, and listening that promote student learning within the specific job sector.
  • Provide co-instruction and collaborate with a content instructor in the delivery of instruction.
  • Meet regularly with the content instructor for co-planning.

Student Support

  • Share information and resources with students in need of financial, academic, and personal assistance.
  • Assist students in the completion of required forms for enrollment and verification of employment.
  • Maintain records of student attendance and academic progress.
  • Work closely with the Program Director, Intake and Assessment Specialist, Instructional Specialist and Job Developer to encourage student retention, goal attainment, and transition to the workforce.

Administrative Duties

  • Works with program director to meet grant outcomes, including delivery of instruction, assessment, and other metrics, as established by state funding sources.
  • Monitor communications from students, staff, and the college and respond in a timely manner, as appropriate.
  • Meet all deadlines for lesson plans, attendance reports, and/or other administrative documentation as required.
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by attending staff development trainings, workshops, and meetings.

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in TESOL, linguistics, education, foreign language, English or related field with ESOL teaching experience OR the equivalent combination of education, training, certification and experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the functions of the job.
  • Experience teaching ESOL for a minimum of two years.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching ESOL using a variety of delivery methods, online resources and technology applications across the curriculum.
  • Experience working with a diverse student population.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States without a sponsor.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in TESOL, linguistics or related field.
  • Experience co-teaching or team-teaching.
  • Experience with content-based instruction.
  • Teaching experience using industry-driven curriculum.
  • Teaching experience in adult or vocational ESOL.
  • Remote/online instruction experience preferred.

  • For international degrees, you must provide US degree equivalency verified by a nationally recognized credential evaluation service.
