Summary of Position

Under the general direction of the Director of Upward Bound, the Associate Director is responsible for assisting the Director with all aspects of administration of the Upward Bound Program. This includes providing academic, career, and college counseling for eligible students; partnering with target schools on recruitment and programming; developing the academic year curriculum and coordinating the academic year program including monthly Saturday Academies, tutoring, and college/cultural trips; providing direct supervision of academic year advisors and tutor-mentors; assisting with recruitment, planning, and supervision of Summer Academy residential and Bridge programs and staff; maintaining website, newsletter, and social media platforms for student and family engagement and digital resources; and providing data collection, evaluation, and grant writing support in compliance with the federal grant.

  1. Master’s Degree preferred (preferably in Counseling, Education, Administration, or related field), with two years of leadership experience with supervisory responsibilities. May consider a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field and four years’ experience as described above.
  2. 3-5 years’ experience working effectively with students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds with an understanding of the needs of low-income/first-generation primary or secondary student populations.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of high school and college curricula, college admissions process, financial aid programs and financial literacy, career exploration activities, curriculum development, and adolescent development.
  4. Experience in selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of professional staff.
  5. Excellent communication, organization, interpersonal, and time-management skills.
  6. Ability to work independently and under flexible conditions.
  7. Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office programs and Google Workspace for Education, database programs (such as Student Access), and social media platforms.
  8. Flexible scheduling, including extended hours in the summer and some nights and weekends. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required (the Associate Director will be advising students in three Manchester, NH high schools).

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  1. Previous experience as a participant or staff member of a TRIO program.
  2. Experience working in pre-collegiate programming for high school students, families, and staff.
  3. Experience in summer academic and residential programming, staffing, and event planning.
  4. Familiarity with target communities & target area high schools (Farmington, Manchester, Rochester, and Somersworth, New Hampshire).

Salary Information

Salary is complemented by a comprehensive benefits package which includes medical, dental, retirement, tuition, and paid time off. UNH TRIO Upward Bound is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Funding level for 2024-2025 is $591,623. All employment at UNH Upward Bound is contingent upon continued funding from the US Department of Education.

Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle required for visiting students in target schools and driving them to and from program activities in rental vehicles. Personal vehicle to be used in compliance with all NH regulations; liability coverage required. The Associate Director will be reimbursed for travel expenses at the current University rate for authorized travel.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Provide direct service delivery to 30-40 low-income, first-generation students at target school(s) providing support in the areas of academic assistance, course planning, college planning, financial aid advising and career exploration.
  • Confer with teachers, counselors, and parents/guardians regularly, and advocate on students’ behalf as necessary.
  • Assist in the identification, recruitment, and selection of all program participants.
  • Develop positive working relationships with target school counselors, teachers, and administrators, seek referrals of appropriate students and make recruitment presentations.
  • Enter contact notes, student documents, and collect data to enter into the program database for general program usage and for the APR (Annual Performance Report).

Duty/Responsibility

  • Develop the academic year curriculum and coordinate the academic year program including monthly Saturday Academies, tutoring, and college/cultural trips.
  • This includes direct supervision of academic year advisors and tutor-mentors, including interviewing, training and professional development, and scheduling.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Assist with planning the Summer Academy residential and Bridge programs, including (but not limited to): preparing program documents and handbook, evaluating appropriate academic class levels for students, scheduling the program, planning group excursions and projects, making all necessary arrangements for participant travel and use of classrooms, residence halls, dining halls and other campus facilities.
  • Help to plan and conduct hiring and supervising of summer staff, including a comprehensive staff training.
  • Ensure that summer staff are meeting program expectations and providing for the safety of student participants.

Duty/Responsibility

  • In concert with the Director, develop long range educational program plans for staff and students which includes evaluating and changing when necessary: staffing patterns, schools served, school programming and curriculum, and services provided.
  • Assist the Director in reviewing policies and procedures and, when appropriate, formulating and implementing new policies and procedures.
  • Annually review and update the UB Policy and Procedure manual.
  • Assist in writing the federal grant.
  • Research needed information for federal grant application.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Manage, edit, and update the Upward Bound social media presence and monthly newsletter to promote student and family engagement, enhance recruitment, and partner with university and community organizations.
  • Research social networking opportunities and digital applications and platforms (such as Tutor.com and Mango Languages) that improve educational opportunities for UB students and staff.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Participate in TRIO & Educational Opportunity Association meetings & conferences including NHEOA, NEOA, and COE.
  • Supervise and administer the program and otherwise fulfill responsibilities of the Director in the Director’s absence.
