Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland, Department of Astronomy is a friendly, collaborative, fast paced, department seeking a Business Coordinator to be part of our high volume Business and Administrative team. The incumbent will be responsible for a broad range of business and administrative tasks to support the Department operations. Strong time management, detail oriented skills, and the ability to meet deadlines are essential for this role.

In this role, the incumbent’s primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • preparing and processing purchasing transactions
  • receiving packages for delivery and distribution
  • preparing and processing travel expense reports
  • routing completed proposals and maintaining the proposal routing log
  • entering transactions into the department shadow system
  • assisting with event planning for the Department
  • maintaining records and files
  • serving as the payroll and benefits coordinator backup
  • providing office coverage as needed
  • performing other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience.

Experience:
Minimum of 2 years relevant experience.

SALARY RANGE
$54,000 to $60,000.

JOB SCHEDULE
This position is expected to be on campus 5 days per week with the possibility of hybrid work after completion of a successful one-year probation period.

Physical Demands

Much of the job is sedentary and will require viewing a computer terminal for long periods of time and substantial repetitive movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers from computer entry work. The incumbent will work primarily in an office environment, with some travel to other buildings on and off campus (attend meetings, pickup/drop-off paperwork, pickup/drop-off packages which may be heavy and require use of carts, etc.). The incumbent will assist in the setup for meetings and events that may require moving furniture, arranging food, technical setups, and so forth. The incumbent may exert 40 lbs. of force to occasionally lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
