DESCRIPTION

The Registered Sr. Dietician, Educator is a member of the interdisciplinary team working in the outpatient Endocrinology and Diabetes Clinic. The RD, CDE provides a ready source of nutrition support, education, training, and consultation to individuals and groups with Diabetes; type 1, type 2, pre-diabetes, Bone Health and other Endocrinology needs as well as general education to health care staff and faculty. The purpose of the role is to encourage healthy lifestyles by educating patients about behaviors that can prevent or mitigate diseases, injuries, and other health problems.

Under supervision of the Service Line Practice Manager, and Clinical Charge RN, the RDN (dietitian) collaborates with healthcare team to provide medical nutrition therapy to pediatric /adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Identifies patients at various nutrition risk levels based on criteria outlined by department. Assesses nutrition needs and identifies nutrient requirements with regard to age and disease-specific needs of patients. Develops, implements and records in EHR the nutrition care plan for all assigned patients. Fosters continuity of care among all phases across the continuum of care. Continuously evaluates and monitors the effectiveness and outcomes of medical nutrition therapy intervention. Manages the delivery of nutrition care in assigned units. Actively participates in medical rounds.

Participates in department's special projects, performance improvement activities, and research. Provides nutrition lectures and in-services to nutrition and clinical staff as assigned. Collaborates with Diet Techs and mentors dietetic interns/students. Actively assesses, evaluates, and maintains professional development and competency related to assigned units. Assists with foodservice projects to improve patient satisfaction. May provide coverage for the Diabetes Management Education Clinic "DMEC" unit in the absence of the primary dietitian following all duties as outlined in the primary RD's job summary.

Senior RDs lead or perform a function on a hospital/ambulatory committee. Initiate and lead quality improvement or research projects on their service line. Resource for clinical staff in the area of their expertise and in most acute-care, nutrition-related issues. Senior RDs solve high-level matters with sparse management involvement. Maintain a high degree of independence and perform at the expert level. May perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in Foods and Nutrition/Dietetics and/or have earned a specialty certification with the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators as Certified Diabetes Educator, is required within 6 months of hire.
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) license issued by the state of California.
  • A minimum of 10 years' experience in a clinical setting including (5) years' experience working inrelated specialty area in the past 10 years.
  • Minimum of one creative or leadership activity every 2 years prior to classification as Senior Dietitian and on-going annually, with ability to solve complex problems and conduct semi-independent research OR lead projects with demonstrated outcomes. (Does not include dietetic intern classes or in-services for UC health system staff.)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of type 1 and type 2 diabetes and ability to perform nutritional consultations and to create meal plans that address the dietary needs of individual diabetes patients.
  • Demonstrate experience teaching small groups (up to 20) in nutrition and diabetes education and interfacing with community groups. Ability to effectively help participants change and maintain dietary and other lifestyle behaviors.
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrate experience in group nutritional and diabetes counseling and education. Strong skills in assessing, designing, implementing, and evaluating the nutritional, lifestyle, and educational needs participants.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to interact positively and effectively with professional and nonprofessional staff, patients, study participants, families, and community support groups.
  • Identifies patient/family problems or learning barriers including physical, cognitive, environmental, language/cultural, financial, psychosocial, and spiritual and provides appropriate referral as necessary.
  • Demonstrate ability to identify when a patient's needs are outside the scope of practice and expertise and arranges for additional services to meet needs.
  • Demonstrate ability to work with adult patients of various ages and backgrounds (socioeconomic, cultural, cognitive, etc.).
  • Must have reliable transportation to travel to multiple locations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bilingual: English/Spanish.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
  • Must be a Registered Dietitian and preferably a Certified Diabetes Educator
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $84,460 - $111,457 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $40.45 - $53.38

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
