We are currently seeking a full-time 1st shift (6:30am - 3:00pm) Monday - Friday, Machinist Apprentice I for our Jet Products facility located in Kearny Mesa.

What Does the Job Involve?

The Machinist Apprentice I develops an understanding for the set up and operation of the machine tools of conventional and/or computer numerical controlled (CNC) machines. Gains hands on experience to fit and assemble parts in a manufacturing environment. Makes adjustments to adhere to established specifications. Monitors work and machining process under the guidance of a mentor. Learns to plan and execute simple, routine, and complex machining assignments using machine tools ranging from multiple axis lathes to mills. Gains experience using precision measuring tools to check accuracy of work.

What will my responsibilities include?

  • Demonstrates understanding of set-ups, adjustments, and operations of conventional and/or computer controlled machines to position tools or regulate cutting depth, speed, feed, or coolant flow to produce precision metal parts and materials as specified by work order, blueprints, drawing, templates, or layout.
  • Understands how to determine specifications or procedures for tooling requirements, set up procedures, machine operation, work-piece dimensions or numerical control sequences using blueprints, instructions, and machine knowledge.
  • Develops knowledge of mounting, aligning, and securing tooling, attachments and work-piece on machine chuck. Understands starts and stops during automatic operation of numerical control machine parts or test setup, work-piece dimensions, or programming. Learns about adjustments to machine controls when automatic programming is faulty or if machine malfunctions.
  • Monitors and gains understanding of maintaining machines during use in order to diagnose machine malfunctions and any needs for adjustments or repairs. Learns about performing routine machine maintenance.
  • Gains understanding of ensuring proper dimensions of finished material to ensure conformance to specifications.
  • Cleans machine, tooling, parts, and area surrounding machine in accordance with 5S procedures when necessary.
  • Demonstrates ability to appear for work on time, follows directions from a supervisor, interacts well with co-workers, understands and follows work rules and procedures, complies with corporate policies, goals and objectives, accepts constructive feedback and exhibits initiative and commitment.
  • Communicates with assigned mentor regularly regarding assigned trainings.
  • Shadows a subject matter expert each month related to a specific core competency.
  • Exhibits a strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrates a strong willingness to learn.
  • Completes all trainings and assignments as designated during the apprenticeship program.
  • Passes all required coursework by achieving minimum acceptable standards.
  • Maintains training record of completed competencies; to be signed off by mentor/trainer.
  • Adheres to all safety and maintenance procedures.

What Key Skills and Experience Do I Need?

  • Ability to read blueprints, drawings, or templates.
  • Ability to perform basic shop math including fractions, decimals, and various units of measure.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools.
  • Ability to control operations of equipment and watch gauges, dials, or other indicators to ensure machine is working properly.
  • Ability to move, install, position, and handle materials.

What Qualifications Should I Have?

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience. Vocational or Trade School experience preferred.
  • 1 year of related work experience in a manufacturing environment or completion of Vocational/Trade School with CNC practicum.
