Research Technologist

Job Description

A position for a Research Technologist is available at the Department of Ophthalmology (Iomini Lab) at the Wilmer Eye Institute at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institute, Baltimore, MD. The position will require the availability of up to 28 hours/per week that will be compensated in compliance with the Johns Hopkins University requirements. Our laboratory studies morphogenesis and disease conditions of the mammalian eye. We specifically focus on understanding signal transduction pathways involved in eye development, regeneration and diseases using the mouse as a model system in combination with advanced two-photon microscopy and single-cell profiling.


We seek a highly motivated individual to conduct well-defined research projects sponsored by the National Eye Institute at NIH involving two-photon confocal microscopy and mouse genetics. Once sufficient skills are acquired, we offer the opportunity to develop independent research associated with our research interests. Experience working with mouse colonies, tissue culture, histological preparations, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, and molecular cloning is highly desirable. The candidate, however, must be comfortable working with mice. Training in mouse handling and colony management will be provided.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and organization of mouse strains involved in the assigned project
  • Perform basic histology tasks, including dissecting eye tissue, paraffin and plastic embedding, sectioning and staining of embedded samples
  • Perform experiments in Immunofluorescence
  • Help with lab organization, inventory, record keeping and ordering
  • Actively increase skills and expertise
  • Help to prepare presentations and written articles for publication


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a related field is required
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred
  • Willingness to work with experimental animals (mice)
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, communication, and computer skills
  • The ability to work independently and as a team member
