The Division of Academic & Student Affairs (DASA) is where students discover connections and community. The Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life advises recognized fraternities and sororities, their governing councils, and manages Greek Village housing. The Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life prepares students for society through a values-based fraternal experience. Our work impacts the student experience in three ways: Chapter Services, Council and Community Development, and Living and Learning Environments. Fraternity and Sorority Life also provides several programs to enhance leadership development and to educate the Greek Community of over 2,800 students
The House Director will coordinate the student development and administrative functions of an Organization-Owned Fraternity or Sorority House and the community within. This position will be directly responsible for the following:

Advising:
  • Create a sense of community by promoting peer accountability among chapter residents.
  • Provide training on university policies reinforcing community standards.
  • Maintain a high level of visibility within the residential community for the purpose of serving as an on-site advisor to chapter residents, including but not limited to regular office hours, chapter programming, and chapter meals.
  • Meet regularly with organization leadership, advisors, and House Corporation volunteers.
  • Advise student residents on the development and implementation of programs, applicable policies and procedures, risk management, issues management, leadership development and organization management.
  • Serve as a mediator to assist residents in addressing community conflicts when they arise.
  • Maintain an environment conducive to student academic success and safety.

Leadership:
  • Provide leadership, administrative operations, programming, and facilities management in a residential house composed of about 40 residents with an additional 100 out of house student members.
  • Make informed decisions based on a clear understanding of the impact and consequences involved.
  • Create and maintaining an open and inclusive community within the house.
  • Serve as a communication link between Fraternity and Sorority Life, House Corporation, and residents.
  • Exercise good judgment and remaining unbiased and impartial while addressing house issues.
  • Participate in department decision-making regarding policies, procedures, programs, and facilities management.
  • Oversee daily operations including facilities, overall resident management, occupancy management, financial budget management to ensure a positive, healthy and safe living-learning environment for our residents.

Policy Enforcement:
  • Respond appropriately to student concerns and addressing student issues.
  • Follow all University Policies, Regulations, and Rules, as well as other University/Fraternity and Sorority Life Procedures, and Guidelines including but not limited to those pertaining to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination.
  • Consulate with the Associate Director to refer cases to the Organizational Standards Board, Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life, CARES, Bias Incident Response or Behavior Assessment Teams, or the Office of Student Conduct.

Crisis Management and On-Call Responsibilities:
  • Make appropriate referrals to University support services ie, Student Health, Counseling Services, Behavior Assessment Team, and/or Student Ombuds.
  • Respond to emergencies and providing leadership in crisis situations, collaborating with campus partners when appropriate.
  • Must be onsite overnight except when prior arrangements have been made for time away.
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Practice effective communication with University administration, Organizational Leadership, and, if applicable, law enforcement or emergency personnel.
  • Serve as a resource or referral agent for students experiencing personal concerns or crisis.

Administration:
  • Coordinate fall and spring student check-in and check-out system.
  • Coordinate and direct the opening and closing of the house, as well as occupancy management of the facility through StarRez.
  • Manage room assignment and room change process for the facility.
  • Initiate change, developing, and implementing new ideas and concepts as appropriate.
  • Participate in departmental and division programs, meetings, and committees as needed.

Facilities:
  • Coordinate inspections as required by the University, state, federal, or local agencies.
  • Tour building and grounds on a regular basis to identify facility needs.
  • Solicit building improvement ideas from staff and residents to share with appropriate organizational leadership and House Corporation. Working in conjunction with Fraternity and Sorority Life staff and Organizational Leadership to ensure the community is well maintained and a safe environment for residents.
  • Work with vendors and maintenance workers to promote compliance with written agreements between the chapter and vendor; report issues of concern regarding outsourced services to the House Corporation.
  • Assist the House Corporation representative in locating local vendors and contractors as needed and requested by the House Corporation.
  • Work with organization leadership and meal plan vendor to establish menus for the chapter on a weekly and monthly basis. Consult with University Nutritionist as appropriate.
  • Work with a meal vendor or catering service (when applicable) to promote compliance with written agreement between the organization and the service provider; report issues of concern regarding meal vendor or catering service to the House Corporation. 
  • Communicate periodic feedback regarding vendor provided services to the House Corporation Board and/or service vendor liaisons.

All House Directors serve as Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) and mandatory reporters

Other duties as assigned and as outlined in the operations manual
provided by the House Corporation.

Minimum Experience/Education

Previous experience managing fraternity and sorority housing,
residential facilities, or experience advising fraternities/sororities
or student activities preferred

Bachelor’s degree preferred

Department Required Skills

  • Ability to perform basic to intermediate functions of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel (or similar software).
  • Ability to work independently and maintain confidential information.
  • Must be able to create and maintain professional and diplomatic interactions with students, parents, alumni, service providers, and campus partners.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, particularly with college-age students, including patience, flexibility, and problem solving.
  • Ability to climb up and down several flights of stairs and lift 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations, if necessary.
  • Must be onsite, overnight, 7 nights per week when members are in residence, except when prior arrangements have been made with the House Corporation for other facility supervision.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

3 years previous experience managing fraternity and sorority housing, residential facilities, or experience advising fraternities/sororities or student activities preferred.
