Vertex Pharmaceuticals has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Scientist to join the In-vitro Pharmacology/Electrophysiology group within the Pharmacology Department. We are seeking a motivated, creative, and innovative scientist with a deep understanding of ion channel physiology and pharmacology. A successful candidate will have broad, hands-on experience using a range of in vitro cellular assays. Preference will be given to candidates with extensive experience with patch clamp electrophysiology, MEA, Ca2+-imaging etc. working with primary cells, including human cells. Experience with data analytics and computational modeling & simulation is highly valued. A successful candidate will demonstrate a strong desire to collaborate within a multidisciplinary drug discovery team.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, validate and execute in-vitro assays, including electrophysiology assays, to support drug discovery projects.
  • Analyze and interpret complex and multidimensional data and effectively document and communicate results.
  • Provide novel insight through data analytics and computational modeling & simulation.
  • Work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment and have excellent organizational and communication skills.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Extensive knowledge of ion channel physiology and pharmacology and applications to drug discovery.
  • Experience with single channel recording and multiple patch clamp configurations (inside-out, cell-attached, etc).
  • Demonstrated experience with MEA.
  • Ability to analyze complex datasets using MATLAB, Python, etc.
  • Background in Neuroscience or Pain and familiarity with drug discovery.
  • Ability to navigate and thrive in a fast-paced, highly matrixed work environment.

  • Demonstrates ability to solve complex problems to attain crucial Project goals
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills and attention to detail in preparing business critical documents (e.g. experimental records, SOPs, and study reports).

Education and Experience:

  • Degree in Physiology, Pharmacology, or related field
  • PhD and 3+ years, or Master's and 5+ years, or Bachelor's and 8+ years.
  • In depth experience in the design, execution, and interpretation of manual and/or automated patch-clamp electrophysiology studies.
  • Experience with computational modeling & simulation of ion channel behavior and drug combination pharmacology.

Pay Range:

$120,880 - $181,320

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
