Research Technologist

Job Description

The Johns Hopkins Greenberg Bladder Cancer Institute (GBCI) is seeking a Research Technologist to work as part of the team conducting research in bladder cancer. The individual will be responsible for performing routine analyses and tests on animals or human fluids and/or tissues or cultured cell lines. Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience.


This role uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention. The individual will also be contributing to the general maintenance of the laboratory, equipment and supplies. Additionally, the individual will support the GBCI with medical record data collection and organization.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Learns and follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments, which may include assays, basic molecular biology, DNA and RNA isolation, PCR and RT-qPCR, sequencing or other specialized histology and biological science techniques.
  • Operates basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, incubator, hemocytometer, light microscope, confocal microscopy and/or utilizes laminar flow hood.
  • Maintains data entry and compiling of data for reports and presentations.
  • Following experimental protocols, monitors animals and maintains health records in accordance with USDA and AALAC guidelines
  • Prepares tissue for study utilizing molecular and histochemical techniques.
  • Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace.
  • Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments.
  • Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.
  • May be asked to assist in studies involving small animal models.
  • Collects data from patient medical records and pathology reports. Maintains databases. Monitors data quality and accuracy as required by research protocol.
  • Prepares data from large data sets for various research projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office.
  • Outstanding organizational skills required.
  • Excellent attention to detail skills required.
  • Must have excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once, and effectively prioritize each.
  • Requires outstanding verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with R-Program, RedCap database, basic programming and/or SQL Server recommended.
  • Preferred but not required: Familiarity with electronic medical records, medical terminology, and pathology reports.


Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

  • PC related software, printers, copiers and scanners.


Physical Requirements

  • Able to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods.
  • Able to reach by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required, able to manipulate objects with fingers rather than entire hand(s) or arm(s), e.g., use of computer keyboard.
  • Able to lift minimum weight, 20 lbs.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • Experience with RNA and DNA assays (i.e., PCR, sequencing).
  • Experience with computer spread sheets (Excel), graphics (Photoshop), word processing (Word).

Starting Salary Range: $15.70 - $26.25 HRLY ($43,680 targeted; Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:30 A.M - 5:00 P.M 
Exempt Status: Non-Exempt
