DESCRIPTION

Mendocino College is seeking a full-time Public Safety Instructor/Coordinator to join our Career Education Department.

Under the general direction of the Dean of Career Education this position provides coordination in the Fire Science (FSC), Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Administration of Justice (ADJ) departments and instruction in at least one of those departments. A successful candidate will meet minimum qualifications in ADJ, EMS, and/or FSC.

This is a full-time categorically funded non-tenured position. The work year consists of a 10-month contract (August-May). The annual teaching load is 510 lecture hours, 680 lab hours, or a combination of the two. This load will be assigned at 75% teaching in one or more of the Public Safety programs and 25% coordination of the Public Safety programs. The annual work year includes 164 instructional days and eleven professional development/flex days. This assignment may include day, evening, and weekend classes, online instruction, as well as travel to, and instruction at, off-campus centers and sites.

SALARY, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Compensation is dependent on education and experience.

Annual salary range is offered at $72,287 - $100,687. Step seven (7) is the maximum step placement based on year for year teaching experience or two years of FTE work experience in the field per step.

Benefits: With NO monthly premium contribution from the faculty member, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes family medical, dental, vision, EAP benefits and employee life insurance. Additional voluntary life insurance is available for employee purchase. Benefits are effective the first of the month following hire date.

Paid Time Off: The successful candidate will earn ten (10) days of sick leave per year.

Retirement: This position is eligible for CalSTRS Retirement. Additional, voluntary 403(b)programs are available.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The successful candidate will support success by providing instructional support and institutional collaboration. This includes the following duties and/or assignments:

Teaching:

  • Possesses a working knowledge of one or more of the Public Safety Programs (FSC, EMS, ADJ)
  • Ability to teach in one or more of the Public Safety Programs (FSC, EMS, ADJ)
  • Provides leadership for students, staff and community members participating in the Public Safety Programs
  • Conducts classes as included in the schedule of classes;
  • Prepares classroom presentations, student activities, and assignments;
  • Evaluates students' performance based on quizzes, exams, projects, comprehensive finals and/or other assessments appropriate to the course outline;
  • Teaches courses in accordance with the description published in the catalog, the course outline of record, and the schedule of classes;
  • Prepares and distributes a syllabus for each course and distributes it to students at the first class meeting and/or electronically;
  • Reports on time and prepared for classes;
  • Posts and maintains student office hours;
  • Maintains current knowledge of the discipline and teaching practices;
  • Prepares and submits accurate and timely student reports.


Department:
The following apply to all Public Safety Programs

  • Schedules department meetings;
  • Participates in program development, review, and revision;
  • Participates in curriculum development, review, modification, and deletion;
  • Develops and assesses student learning outcomes in the discipline;
  • Participates in full-time and part-time faculty evaluations;
  • Provides input and assistance to the Dean regarding the schedule of classes, schedule changes, and the recruitment and assignment of part-time faculty in the discipline; and collaborates with the campus centers concerning classes in the discipline;
  • Supervises all department facilities.


Institution:

  • Reports prepared and on time for meetings; attends in-service days, commencements, and faculty meetings as scheduled;
  • Completes required flex hours for professional development purposes;
  • Serves on college committees;
  • May supervise student workers in the discipline;
  • Participates in the development of an annual budget for the disciplines, submits purchase orders, maintains related records;
  • Participates in the completion of program review;
  • Participates in the processes of shared governance;
  • Secures and properly stores equipment assigned to discipline;
  • Conducts a periodic inventory of equipment;
  • Participates in activities to create and promote career pathways, including articulation with local high schools and four-year colleges;
  • Actively engages with program advisory committees for all Public Safety Programs;
  • Serves as fulltime faculty liaison to provide oversight of all Public Safety Programs
  • Supports the Dean of Career Education with contracts and Memorandums of Understanding with external agencies for facility and equipment use and instructional services.


QUALIFICATIONS

Must meet Human Resources guidelines for qualified hiring; including by not limited to a Live Scan background check and completion of TB test.

Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, geographic and ethnic backgrounds of students, staff, and faculty.

EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful applicant is required to meet the minimum qualifications of any one of the following disciplines: Fire Technology, Emergency Medical Technologies, or Administration of Justice; as defined below.

As defined in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges & Title 5 regulations:

Fire Science/Fire Technology:

The minimum qualifications are any bachelor's degree or higher and two years (full time equivalent) of professional experience AND California State Fire Training Certifications-Instructor I and II and 5 years professional experience. The professional experience required must be directly related to the successful applicant's teaching assignment.

OR

any associate degree and six years (full time equivalent) of professional experience AND California State Fire Training Certifications-Instructor I and II and 5 years professional experience. The professional experience required must be directly related to the successful applicant's teaching assignment.

OR

Emergency Medical Technologies:

The minimum qualifications are any bachelor's degree or higher and two years of professional experience AND per the Title 22 California Code of Regulations, successful completion of a 40-hour EMS Instructor Course or State Fire Training Instructor I Certification and be either a Physician, Registered Nurse, Physician Assistant, or a Paramedic currently licensed in California, and who has two (2) years of academic or clinical experience in emergency medicine or prehospital care in the last five (5) years.

Or

any associate degree and six years of professional experience AND per the Title 22 California Code of Regulations, successful completion of a 40-hour EMS Instructor Course or State Fire Training Instructor I Certification and be either a Physician, Registered Nurse, Physician Assistant, or a Paramedic currently licensed in California, and who has two (2) years of academic or clinical experience in emergency medicine or prehospital care in the last five (5) years.

Administration of Justice:

One or more years teaching experience in one or more of the Public Safety Disciplines, at the secondary or community college level.
