Brightpoint Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education and is the third largest of Virginia’s 23 community colleges. The college is located within the Greater Richmond metropolitan area. It serves students and the community at its two campuses, in Chester and Midlothian; online; and in locations throughout its service area. General Information: The Division of Science, Health and Human Services at Brightpoint Community College augments full-time teaching faculty with qualified part-time instructors to enhance the student learning process. Adjunct Faculty teaching is limited to a maximum of 8 credit hours in the summer semester, 12 credit hours in the fall semester, and 12 credit hours in the spring semester. These limits are for total number of credit hours taught in the Virginia’s Community Colleges (VCCS). Additional restrictions may apply depending upon other positions occupied within the VCCS.

Responsibilities: Brightpoint Community College invites applicants to apply for Human Services and Mental Health adjunct position to teach courses in human services, mental health, and substance use that prepare students for a career working within the human services and helping professions or for transfer into baccalaureate social work programs at participating universities. Course content focuses primarily on social work theory, substance use, mental health, therapeutic interviewing, communication skills, gerontology, child welfare and social justice. Teaching assignments include a combination of day and evening classes in face-to-face, hybrid, and/or online formats on either the Chester or Midlothian campus of the college. Courses offered in the discipline include the following: Introduction to Human Services, Substance Abuse I, Mental Health Skill Training I, Mental Health Skill Training II, Substance Abuse II, Working with Death and Dying, Functional Family Intervention, Gerontology, Case Management and Substance Abuse, Intellectual Disabilities I, On-Site Training and Coordinated Practice.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
Required: Minimum of a Master’s degree with 18 graduate semester hours of coursework in the specific disciplines; Human Services, Social Work, similar helping profession or equivalent, from a regionally accredited college or university. A minimum of two years of related field experience, with strong current knowledge of best practices in the field. Proven expertise in the subject matter being taught. Additional Considerations: Understanding of social justice, trauma informed approaches, and intersectionality. Relevant college-level teaching experience with a diverse student population. Training/certification to teach online and hybrid courses. Experience in the use of interactive instructional technologies in the classroom and online.
