For many years, the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) and SNAP-Ed Steps to Health (STH) have been helping limited-resource families and youth learn to eat and prepare healthier meals and snacks, reduce the risk of food-borne illnesses, stretch their food dollars, and become more physically active. In collaboration with many organizations through the “Eat Smart, Move More” initiative, NC EFNEP and SNAP-Ed STH aim to help reduce the rising tide of obesity by teaching eligible participants practical skills resulting in changed behaviors to eat smart and move more and make the healthy choice the easy choice.

The Nutrition Education Program Assistant (PA) serving as the Nutrition Educator is an employee of NC Cooperative Extension, NC State University. Under the supervision of the County Extension Director (CED) with guided assistance from the Regional Nutrition Extension Associate (RNEA), the PA delivers nutrition and related subject matter to enrolled participants. The individual in this position will recruit and enroll eligible audiences to include adult and/or school-aged youth participants into the program, deliver approved curriculum to adults and/or youth groups, teach basic principles of nutrition and food preparation skills, submit required program records as requested, promote the program within the assigned area, recruit volunteers from within the community to assist with programming, collaborate with local Cooperative Extension staff and agencies, and assist with securing program resources. The PA receives programmatic guidance from the RNEA with overall supervision provided by the CED. The PA and the RNEA work with the Family and Consumer Science Agent, 4-H Agent, and the CED to meet the needs of the county. Renewal of the position is contingent on the availability of funds.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
*North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and North Carolina A & T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension delivers unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities
Under the programmatic guidance of the RNEA, the PA conducts nutrition education to low-income adults and/or youth in group settings. While performing this role the PA:

Travel required within county, district, and state using a personal vehicle. Personal vehicle is required.

Recruit school-aged youth, individuals, and/or families with children who meet the federal eligibility guidelines for participation in EFNEP and SNAP-Ed.

Instructs eligible youth, individuals, and/or families with children in nutrition education using approved curricula and teaching methods. Conduct food demonstrations to adult and/or youth groups.

Facilitates the collection of required data and submits appropriate reports to CED, RNEA, EFNEP and STH State office.

Coordinates with collaborating agencies to extend program outreach to eligible audiences. Establish and maintain partnerships with agencies and organizations serving eligible audiences.

Attends and participates in required local, regional, or statewide meetings, trainings, and other professional development as designated by the CED, RNEA, EFNEP and/or STH state office. A few may require overnight travel.

Meets established programmatic standards for performance and impact.
Maintains confidentiality of program information.

Enhances program visibility by communicating program impacts to local stakeholders and potential participants.

Recruits, trains, and utilizes volunteers to assist in program promotion, data collection, and program delivery.

Promotes educational opportunities within NC Cooperative Extension and partnering agencies to program participants.

Minimum Experience/Education

The minimum requirement for employment with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension (NCCE) is a high-school diploma or equivalent. Advanced training in related fields is preferred.

Department Required Skills

Knowledge of the community and social service programs for low-income families; Experience teaching and/or working with limited resource adults and/or youth; and/or nutrition education experience.
