DESCRIPTION

The Moores Cancer Center is one of just 52 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States and the only one in San Diego County. As a consortium cancer center, it is a collaborative partnership between the UCSD: encompassing 14 departments (12 clinical, 2 basic sciences), 3 professional schools (School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Public Health), UCSD Health oncology hospitals and clinics; the basic and public health research and outreach of San Diego State University, and the basic and translational research of the LaJolla Institute of Immunology. Under direct supervision, the Lab Assistant will assist in basic laboratory duties including front desk support, maintaining laboratory supplies and equipment and keep the laboratory area clean and organized. The incumbent will assist with steps of the routine histology processing and assist with administration including billing, ledgers, income and expenditures. Will keep up to date inventory, assist with expense reports.

The Lab Assistant will maintain laboratory environmental health and safety activities including radioactive, chemical and biological waste disposal. The incumbent must comply and keep up to date on all safety training. Other duties assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge in biology and chemistry. Ability to work with histology and/or histochemistry preferred.

  • Experience working in a research lab environment and basic knowledge of biological terms. Willingness to follow step-wise experimental protocols. Skill and ability to keep accurate data.

  • Ability to use basic laboratory equipment including balances and pH meters.

  • General computer skills, to input data, store results and compute raw data. Knowledge of Access, MS Word and Excel.

  • Knowledge in basic math for maintaining ledgers, income and expenditures reports.

  • Willingness to become familiar with proper handling of chemical and biohazard materials.

  • Willingness to maintain confidentiality.

  • Organizational skills to order and maintain lab equipment and supplies.

  • Willingness to adhere to established UCSD guidelines for safety and environmental issues. Ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.

  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment. Willingness to work with other staff members, students, faculty etc.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Ability to work with human biological samples as well as radioactive, chemical and biological waste.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $44,662 - $52,513 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $21.39 - $25.15

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
