DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, the Pancreatic Cancer Patient Care Coordinator provides clinically expert service for pancreatic cancer patients referred to Moores Cancer Center. Serves as liaison between patients and physicians and clinical staff, assessing and determining the acuity of patient symptoms and communicating these to the relevant specialists. The pancreatic cancer patient care coordinator will interview all new patients and assess their needs to expedite disposition and multidisciplinary care. Assesses and provides physician assistant functions including ordering appropriate tests for pancreatic cancer diagnosis and staging and conveys results to patients, including instructions and lab results, providing health education as needed. Triages all incoming patient calls and electronic messages from new pancreatic cancer patients. Manages and documents all communications in the electronic medical record system. Evaluates and organizes pancreatic cancer patient's care journey by referral to all relevant specialties and ancillary services. Direct supervision will occur by assigned physician leaders in surgical, medical and radiation oncology. The position requires a strong emphasis on efficiently organizing comprehensive care of the pancreatic cancer patient, from diagnosis to initiation of therapy. Position requires deep knowledge, skills and abilities in multidisciplinary pancreatic cancer care. Additionally, the role will encompass clinical assessment and ongoing management of pancreatic cancer survivorship care.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a graduate from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

  • California Physician Assistant (PA) license.

  • Current PA Certification from NCCPA.

  • Current BART certification, or BLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get UCSD BART within six months of hire date.

  • Minimum one (1) year of experience as a licensed Physician Assistant in Oncology.

  • Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, and general medicine, including basics in pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery - in particular cancer, therapeutics, including pharmacology, counseling techniques, and interpersonal dynamics.

  • Ability perform initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret data in a meaningful manner.

  • Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment e.g., tissue perfusion measuring devices.

  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes, as well as policies, procedures and protocols for patient care management.

  • Ability to maintain detailed medical information in an organized and easily retrievable manner.

  • Ability to perform various medical procedures, for diagnostic studies and therapeutic modalities.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel, and skill at providing clear written, verbal and telephone communication with a wide variety of people.

  • Knowledge of all types of treatment and modalities necessary for patients care and well-being, and ability to write orders regarding execution of inpatient, outpatient plans of treatment.

  • Ability to assess the daily status and progress of patients and report this effectively to the physician in-charge and other medical care personnel associated with the patient.

  • Ability to maintain good working relationships and communications with physicians in-charge, laboratory personnel, and members of the health care team.

  • Knowledge of medical ethics and law practices, pertaining to medical and medical socioeconomics.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Outpatient experience caring for pancreatic cancer patients as a Physician Assistant.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be willing to work flexible, variable hours.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $148,791 - $196,001 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $71.26 - $93.87

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
