Job Description

 

Alabama State University, Department of Public Safety, invites applications for the position of Police Investigator. The selected candidate will investigate reported crimes and incidents using the full range of investigative techniques, to include leveraging available surveillance technology, university owned technology programs as well as more traditional investigative techniques such as conducting in depth interviews in an effort to determine responsibility and ensure a safe campus community.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct detailed investigations of complex criminal activities and other violations of local, federal, or state law and collect, analyze, and preserve evidence
  • Direct crime scene investigators and other law enforcement members while at crime scenes
  • Develop and demonstrate a multicultural awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse and respectful university community
  • Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students and visitors to the University
  • Screens and interview candidate and conduct background investigations as assigned
  • Provide technical support and expertise to University Emergency Management Team on the development and review of plans, policies, and procedures at university level, as well as other departments
  • The Police Investigator interviews and obtains all written statements connected with case investigations, resolving and disposes of each incident or complaint
  • Prepares case files; reports to the court system the findings on criminal cases; prepares warrants, arrest reports and completes all necessary paperwork
  • Testify before the ASU University Hearing Officer and Vice-President of Student Affairs on cases regarding ASU students; prepare and serve misdemeanor and felony warrants as they pertain to students
  • Ensure completed work is error free and 100% correct; adhere to deadlines prescribed by governing regulations, policies and supervisors; understand and adhere to departmental policies and Federal, State and Municipal laws governing the police investigative work; ensure all testimonies are complete and without error; ensure all actions are professional in conduct, tactfully handled and are as prescribed by departmental policy
  • Perform a quality review of all incident/offense reports for accuracy, clarity and correctness
  • Demonstrate a thorough working knowledge of all facets of the Police Investigations career field; demonstrate the ability to clearly and quickly organize thoughts and communicate them clearly in spoken or written form; demonstrate basic personal computer skills and the ability to use word processing and database management programs
  • Work effectively with other police departments in exchanging information on suspects and previous arrests and in conducting mutual investigations
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in criminal justice criminology, emergency management, computer science or related field form an accredited college or university, valid driver license and insurable driving record, must be certified by the Alabama Peace Officers Standard and Training Commission (APOSTC), have a firm grasp of the legal aspects of criminal investigations, report writing, critical thing, and have minimum of 5 years of law enforcement experience required. Experience investigating sexual assault, domestic and dating violence or stalking is highly preferred.
