Senior Language Instructor of English Language Centre
Job Description
The English Language Centre (ELC) of School of General Education (SGE) is a large and well-established department offering a range of courses and support services to students throughout their undergraduate studies. Students enrolled in UIC degree programmes are taught in English, so the ELC is responsible for ensuring that they are prepared for both the language and academic requirements of courses that use English as a medium of instruction. Now the ELC invites applications for appointment as Senior Language Instructor in September 2024.
Job Description
1. To develop, coordinate and manage the non-curricular activities that run as part of the Independent Learning Hub (ILH);
2. To contribute to the development of a new language instructor programme within the English Language Centre (ELC) and manage the language instructor team;
3. To deliver one curriculum-based class each semester, with training and support provided by the ELC;
4. To provide tutorial support to students and assist in student activities;
5. To update and maintain ELC promotional channels, such as the ILH iSpace and ELC WeChat account;
6. To provide administrative support for the Centre and the School, as instructed by the Centre Head and Dean of SGE.
Job Requirement
1. The position holder should hold a minimum of a Master’s degree in a related subject and a TEFL certificate;
2. The position holder should have a high standard of both spoken and written English;
3. The position holder should have two year’s tertiary level experience teaching English as a Second Language;
4. The position holder should have excellent organization and time management skills, and be familiar with working in an educational environment;
5. The position holder should have, or gain following appointment: a good understanding of the regulations set out in the UIC Staff Handbook and be able to apply these fairly and consistently when necessary;
6. The position holder should have, or gain following appointment: a good understanding of the rules, regulations and norms of working in the PRC, as well as where these differ from in other countries, and be able to communicate these clearly to the language instructor team;
7. The position holder should be committed to upholding equality and diversity in the workforce and be fair and evenhanded in their treatment of others;
8. The position holder should be capable of handling challenging situations and willing to seek help and guidance when required.
Benefits and Appointment Terms
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and relevant experience. Fringe benefits include housing allowance, leave and social insurance. Appointment to this position will initially be made on a fixed-term contract with mutual agreement.
