GENETICS POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW- Conteras Lab

Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join our multi-disciplinary team in the Contreras-Galindo Laboratory. This role will perform an important contribution of investigating the function of repetitive areas of the human genome. The group has a special interest in molecular biology, cytogenetics and genomics of centromeres and telomeres. Special preference will be experience with culture of stem cells and development of organoids.

Centromeres and Telomeres are structural units responsible for the correct segregation of chromosomes during cell division. Destabilization of centromere function results in chromosomal missegregation and instability, hallmarks of fibrosis, cancers, and birth defects.

Our laboratory is investigating the function of centromere and telomere sequences, the epigenetic interactions of chromatin factors, and the role these elements play in chromosome segregation and genome instability and the development of in non-disjunction disorders, cancers, and fibrosis.

Duties/Responsibilities As a member of our group, the candidate would be expected to be a leader, both intellectually and in the lab. The candidate would be expected to work on multiple aspects of one or more projects at any one time. This will include, but is not limited to, experimental design, implementation, and data collection as well as the analysis, dissemination of research data, manuscript publication, and grant writing. The individual would be expected to work independently but also to frequently collaborate with other lab members as well as scientists at other institutions. General Responsibilities 

·  To employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures in a particular field of specialization.

·  To plan, design and conduct research and present findings. 

Key Duties & Responsibilities 

1.       Designs and conducts experiments.

2.       Collects and analyzes data and disseminate results in accordance with the research goals of the lab.

3.       Writes manuscripts and grants.

4.       Assists with training other lab members in specialized techniques and with the development and implementation of experiments.

5.       Preforms lab maintenance and organization, including equipment maintenance and general lab cleanup.

6.       Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Philosophy, D.V.M. or M.D. degree in a related field and four (2) years of related experience
  • Work with stem cells
  • Development of organoids
