The History department at Southampton consists of a welcoming and collegiate team whose interests span from the ancient world to the present day. We are committed to teaching excellence and our teaching is research-led. We were ranked 11th in the last REF. This is a one-year post providing cover for a colleague who has received external funding.

The role

The History department is seeking to recruit a lecturer in modern American history on a 12-month contract (September 2024 to August 2025). We wish to appoint a lecturer with expertise in American race relations in the late 19thand early 20th centuries. You will deliver existing teaching on the BA History and the MA History, as well as new teaching on the MA Global Challenges, up to approximately 9 hours of teaching per week. You will be assigned a mentor to support you with your teaching and your research plans. You will also contribute to the life and administrative running of the History department.

About you

You will have a PhD in American history, with a demonstrable research focus on and/or teaching expertise on American race relations in the late 19th/early 20th centuries. You will demonstrate a commitment to education and an ability to bring your own research to bear on the enhancement of our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. In this role, you will deliver two existing modules – Ragtime: The Making of Modern America (year 2, 15 credits) and Racism and Resistance: From slavery to BLM (year 1, 30 credits) - as well as making contributions to core modules in all three years of the BA History. You will also make contributions to team taught modules on the MA History and the MA Global Challenges. We value collegiality, enthusiasm, and an interest in interdisciplinary work.

You will be an active researcher in the field of modern American history, with peer-reviewed publications or well-developed plans for peer-reviewed publications in the field. You will be able to apply and stretch your expertise to contribute to thematic and methodological modules not primarily focused on American history. An interest in the application of historical understanding to contemporary social and political issues is an advantage.

As a university we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We believe that we can only truly meet our objectives if we are reflective of society, so we are passionate about creating a working environment in which you are free to bring your whole self to work.

With a generous holiday allowance as well as additional university closure days we are committed to supporting our staff and students and open to a flexible working approach.
