Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The University of Maryland (UMD), College Park, welcomes applications for a fully funded postdoctoral position working alongside a multidisciplinary team of researchers and practitioners with the Prevent Gun Violence: Research, Empowerment, Strategies and Solutions (PROGRESS) initiative. The mission of PROGRESS—a UMD Fearlessly Forward Initiative sponsored by the Office of the President and housed within the College of Behavior and Social Sciences (BSOS)—is to reduce firearm-related violence using a multi-disciplinary, community-based, and translational science approach to promote public safety and enhance the quality of life for Marylanders and people across the nation. Bringing together the strengths and assets of UMD enables PROGRESS to act for the public’s good to prevent gun violence and save lives.
The postdoctoral researcher will play a key role in helping to implement an interdisciplinary, community empowerment approach to reduce firearm-related violence, especially in the National Capital Region (Washington, DC-Baltimore-N. Virginia). The researcher will help PROGRESS and its partners directly engage with communities to produce research, education, and evidence-based actionable gun violence interventions that reduce gun violence and enhance public safety. To advance gun violence reduction, PROGRESS draws on multiple data streams, including public health and criminal-legal sources; in this way, the initiative provides a unique opportunity for affiliated researchers to work and train as part of a truly multidisciplinary and multi-organizational cohort of gun violence reduction experts.
The postdoctoral researcher will be enabled and encouraged to interact with a broad range of communities and constituencies to build innovative collaborations and groundbreaking projects to advance the mission of PROGRESS.
The initial duration of this appointment is for a two-year term with the potential for extension based on performance and availability of funding. Most work will be performed in-person on the UMD campus, but a partial telework schedule can be arranged.
