About the Department

The Department of Nuclear Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Nuclear Engineering. We are the only nuclear engineering program in the state of North Carolina and one of the premier departments in the southeast United States. Our purpose is to enhance, promote, and utilize the PULSTAR research reactor and associated facilities in an exemplary manner, leading to national recognition as a premier 1-MW Nuclear Reactor Program dedicated to research, teaching, and extension.

The PULSTAR reactor facility is available for use by research faculty and staff within the UNC system or at other academic institutions, and by governmental agencies and industries in the State of North Carolina and the Nation.

Essential Job Duties

Work with Nuclear Reactor Program (NRP) staff to support the mechanical/electrical design, engineering and maintenance needs of the PULSTAR reactor and associated facilities. Participate in the development of major facility systems and experimental instruments. 

Support major activities for infrastructure upgrades and R&D projects. Obtain status as a reactor operator (RO) and subsequently senior reactor operator (SRO). Contribute to the development of facility/instrument procedures, safety evaluations, and license amendment applications. Support reactor utilization and interface with users. Participate in the training of new personnel.

Other Responsibilities

Other responsibilities are as assigned by the Director of the NRP.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline such as Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a similar field plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Obtain Reactor Operator (RO) license for the operation of the PULSTAR reactor within one year after hire. 
  • Understand technical operating, service and repair manuals. 
  • Ability to monitor all systems for normal running conditions, performing activities such as checking instruments and gauges to assess output or assess the effects of generator loading on other equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with tenets and implementation of safety and security culture.
  • Ability to use design and engineering tools such as Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, SolidWorks. 
  • Programing experience using capabilities such as MATLAB and C++.
  • Greater than or equal to one year of experience with each of the following activities: 1) maintenance, and surveillance; 2) familiarity with implementation of Emergency and Security Plans and required procedures; 3) past experience with research reactor projects including for infrastructure upgrades and R&D; 4) design and installation of experimental apparatus, and 5) familiarity with methods of radiation measurements.
